Report: Sudan… The New Focus of Iran's Global Campaign

By: Tasbeeh Mubarak (based on a report from the Jerusalem Post).

The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post claims that Sudan has become a strategic link in Iran's "global terrorist campaign" against Israel and Western powers. This geopolitical shift is premised on a resumption of relations between Tehran and Khartoum, after years of diplomatic and military estrangement.

Taking advantage of the political chaos and security vacuum weakening Sudan, Iran has formed strategic alliances, establishing the country at the heart of its regional expansion. According to the report, Tehran has provided the Sudanese army with advanced military equipment, including drones and surveillance and intelligence systems. In return, Iran is using the commander of the Sudanese armed forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to consolidate its influence across Africa and the Middle East.

Sudan's geographical location, overlooking the Red Sea, is a significant asset. This foothold provides Iran with strategic access to international shipping routes, while also allowing it to establish logistical infrastructure for its regional allies, notably Hamas and Hezbollah. If the Houthis are weakened in Yemen, Sudan could become their operational successor, becoming Iran's new armed wing in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. Israeli intelligence services are expressing concern about this.

Finally, Tel Aviv considers Al-Burhan a priority military target. Beyond his central role in the army, he is accused, according to the Israeli version, of facilitating, without opposition or transparency, the Iranian military establishment on Sudanese territory, despite the diplomatic relations formerly maintained between Khartoum and Israel.
