Egypt: Burhan Visits Cairo at the Invitation of the Egyptian President
By: Charilogone Editorial StaffAt the special invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan visited Cairo on Monday, April 28, 2025, to discuss strategic issues affecting the future of Sudan and relations between the two countries.
This meeting is part of an ambitious reconstruction plan for Sudan led by Egypt, which views the Sudanese conflict as a direct threat to its national and economic security. Among the topics discussed was the return of Sudanese refugees who fled the war. The two sides discussed establishing a timetable for their repatriation to Sudan.
Another key point of the discussions concerned the issue of Islamists within the Sudanese army. Egypt has expressed its desire to see these elements excluded from the army, but observers believe this request is proving difficult to achieve. Indeed, Islamists hold a dominant position in terms of numbers and leadership within the army, complicating any attempts at reform in this regard.
Observers believe that the Sudanese conflict requires a broader regional solution, involving IGAD and the African Union to organize a dialogue meeting. Egypt, despite its diplomatic efforts, may find itself unable to reach a lasting resolution to this conflict. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in particular, regularly reject what they perceive as Egyptian interference in Sudanese affairs, further complicating any mediation.
This visit thus highlights the geopolitical and humanitarian challenges facing Egypt and Sudan, while underscoring the need for an inclusive approach to achieve lasting peace in the region.
