South Sudan: Attack on Wanalit Military Garrison and Rising Tensions

    By: Charilogone Editorial Staff

Riek Machar's party announced that its military garrison located in Wanalit, about fifteen kilometers from the capital, Juba, had been attacked. In a statement, a spokesperson denounced this provocative act, calling it a flagrant violation of the peace agreement signed in 2018.

This attack comes as Washington expresses deep concern over the escalation of violence and the threat of clashes between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those of his rival, First Vice President Riek Machar. The 2018 peace agreement, which aimed to share power and stabilize the country, now appears to be weakening, rekindling fears of a return to civil war.

According to Reuters, this situation highlights the persistent tensions between the two sides, threatening to plunge South Sudan back into a cycle of violence.
