Chad: GCAP denounces decrees deemed abusive targeting civil society
By: — Charilogone Editorial StaffN'Djamena, June 30, 2025 — The Political Actors Consultation Group (GCAP) has expressed serious concern following a series of decrees issued by Chad's Ministry of Territorial Administration, which it describes as abusive and contrary to fundamental freedoms. These measures particularly target certain civil society associations, sparking outrage in political and civic circles.
Among the organizations concerned are the Youth Association for Rural Development (AJADR) and the National Youth Coordination for Peace and Development (CONAJEPDT), both dissolved by ministerial decision. Two citizen movements—Le Temps and Wakit-Tama (political section)—have also had their activities banned.
According to the ministry, these orders were motivated by administrative irregularities and alleged activities contrary to public order. However, for the GCAP, these decisions violate freedom of association and reflect a clear desire to silence dissenting voices.
Legal experts and civil society actors, such as Alain Kagonbe, denounce a worrying trend of political repression, citing an authoritarian drift incompatible with Chad's constitutional framework.
The AMCP therefore calls for the immediate reversal of these measures, urging the government to prioritize dialogue and respect for civil rights as essential pillars of democratic stability.
