Strategic Surveillance in the Red Sea Region: The ELM-2084 Radar in Somaliland

Strategic Surveillance in the Red Sea Region: The ELM-2084 Radar in Somaliland
By: Alfred Djasnan - CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Charilogone.

The Israeli-designed ELM-2084 radar was recently installed in Puntland, a region within Somaliland, located in northern Somalia and claiming independence. Deployed in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, this 3D multifunction active phased array radar offers an impressive coverage area of 500 kilometers, enabling in-depth surveillance and precise detection of air and ground threats.

Primarily used for defense systems such as the Iron Dome and David's Sling, this equipment significantly strengthens defense capabilities in this strategic area. Its installation comes in a tense geopolitical context, marked by the UAE's desire to secure sensitive areas and counter threats, such as Houthi missile strikes targeting Israel. In addition, this radar could monitor pirate planes that fly over Sudan and bomb civilians and infrastructure.

However, this project raises important questions. The agreements between the parties involved and the impact of this initiative on relations between Somaliland and the Somali federal government remain unclear. Some Egyptian sources suggest that the installation of this radar could also serve to support the FSR forces. Finally, the implications for maritime security in the Gulf of Aden, a key international trade route, deserve special attention.

As mentioned in our previous analyses under the title (Sudan: The Key to Geopolitical Domination in the Middle East), the United States, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates could control the southern exit of the Red Sea, thus influencing Houthi operations and maritime trade passing through the Suez Canal.
