Port Sudan Under Fire from the RSF: An Alarming Escalation of the Conflict in Sudan

    By: Charilogone Editorial Staff

On May 6, 2025, the conflict in Sudan took a new turn with massive airstrikes carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on strategic sites in Port Sudan, the city that houses the temporary seat of government. The targets include the army's main command base, the international airport, and the seaport, all vital infrastructure for the country.

    Third Day of Bombing
For three days, Port Sudan has been under continuous bombardment, marking a turning point in the war that has pitted the RSF against the regular army since April 2023. Until recently, the city was relatively spared from the fighting, but the current attacks have caused massive explosions, fires, and a suspension of flights at the airport.

    Strategic targets under high pressure
The airstrikes targeted critical military and civilian infrastructure:

Army Command Base: Nerve point for government military operations.

Port Sudan International Airport: Essential for travel and delivery of humanitarian aid.

Seaport: Crucial economic hub for imports and trade.

Fuel Depot: Attacked by drones, causing a major fire and disrupting the city's energy supply.

Power Station: Several neighborhoods plunged into darkness after its destruction.

Ammunition Depot: Targeted by strikes, exacerbating military tensions.

Hotels near the residence of the Head of the Sovereign Council: Suspected of harboring senior military officials.

Humanitarian Impact and Risk of Prolonging the Conflict
The consequences of these bombings are disastrous for the local population. Port Sudan, which is home to hundreds of thousands of displaced people, is a central point for humanitarian aid. The destruction of this infrastructure risks worsening the crisis.

The FSR, which lacks conventional aircraft, has increased its use of explosive drones to strike areas far from its usual positions. This military strategy could prolong the conflict and make peace negotiations even more difficult.

    International Reactions and Growing Concerns
Faced with this escalation of attacks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his concern, stressing that these strikes jeopardize the protection of civilians and complicate humanitarian operations.

As the conflict between the army and the RSF enters its third year, the fighting in Port Sudan could be a turning point. How the clashes unfold in the coming weeks will be crucial for the stability of the country and the region.
