Chad: Surge in Arbitrary Arrests – Opposition and Civil Society Under Pressure

BY: THE EDITORIAL TEAM OF #CHARILOGONE

Chad’s political climate has entered a new phase of tension, marked by a series of arrests and abductions targeting opposition figures and civil society leaders. Several organizations and observers have voiced concern over what they describe as a deterioration of the political environment and a growing threat to fundamental freedoms.

In recent days, several prominent individuals have been arrested or abducted under circumstances widely denounced as arbitrary. Among them is Professor Djona Avocksouma, president of the RPJ, who was taken along with his wife, Dr. Hassanié, as well as Max Kemkoye, a well‑known figure in Chad’s democratic landscape. Other opposition members have also been detained, including Dr. Nassour Koursami, Badano, Kelo Bombay, Ahmat Bokori, Abdel Moumine, and Mahamat Djiara. Additionally, the GCAP reports that Neatobaye Bidi Valentin, president of the PAP/JS, was violently abducted by the ANS.

According to opposition members and several human rights organizations, these arrests are part of a broader strategy aimed at shrinking the political space. They point to practices such as bans on public gatherings, restrictions on press conferences, the dissolution of political parties, and the criminalization of civic initiatives. For these actors, such methods undermine the rule of law and foster a climate of fear.

In response to this situation, various voices are calling for the immediate and unconditional release of those detained, as well as the launch of independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding these arrests. Several organizations are also urging the international community to remain vigilant and to document these events, arguing that silence could pave the way for the repetition of such practices.

In this context, the Charilogone editorial team reaffirms its commitment to continuing its work of informing the public, maintaining that transparency and civic vigilance remain essential to preventing abuses and defending fundamental rights.
