Washington Reaffirms Support for the Lobito-Katanga Megarail Project
By: Charilogone Editorial StaffAt the 17th U.S.-Africa Business Summit, held from June 22 to 25 in Luanda, the United States reiterated its commitment to the Lobito Corridor, a major rail project designed to connect Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia.
Troy Fitrell, Director of the Bureau of African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, emphasized at a press conference on June 25, 2025, that:
"The Lobito Corridor represents a strong and priority commitment for the United States."
This project plans to leverage up to $5 billion in public and private investment to strengthen the subregion's rail and logistics infrastructure. It is a strategic route for developing mineral exports from the Zambian Copperbelt and Congolese Katanga to the Atlantic, via the port of Lobito.
Supported by institutions such as the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the African Finance Corporation (AFC), the corridor is considered the largest open-access infrastructure project supported by the United States in Africa.
