The Arrest of Nicolás Maduro: A Major Geopolitical Turning Point

Analysis: Alfred C. DJASNAN, CEO of Charilogone Media International

On January 3, 2026, U.S. Special Forces (Delta Forces) arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, an historic event with global repercussions. This military operation, carried out in Caracas, is part of Washington’s broader strategy to assert its power and send a strong message to leaders considered weak or defiant.

In less than five years, two strategic allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin — Bashar al-Assad in Syria and Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela — have been removed from power. Neither Russia nor China was able to prevent these arrests, thereby exposing the limits of their influence in the face of American determination. This reality illustrates a constant rule in geopolitics: great powers impose their agreements and reshape the balance of power at the expense of weaker states.

Following this logic, Washington now seeks to cooperate with the Venezuelan opposition, which has consistently contested Maduro’s rise to power after the death of President Hugo Rafael Chávez. A significant Venezuelan community already resides in the United States, which facilitated the establishment of contacts and the preparation for the post-Maduro era.

All attempts at partnership between Washington and the Maduro government failed, as Maduro stubbornly clung to the strength of his alliances with China, Russia, and Iran. Yet this strategic calculation backfired: his international support could not prevent his downfall, revealing the growing isolation of his regime.

The case of Egypt, which rejected the U.S.-Israeli plan to resettle Gazans in the Sinai Peninsula, as well as tensions over the passage of American ships through the Suez Canal, demonstrate that other issues remain unresolved. Likewise, Libya, Somaliland, and Sudan remain central to U.S. strategy, which aims to maintain direct or indirect influence in regions strategic for energy, security, and trade routes.

The arrest of Maduro should therefore not be seen as an isolated event, but as a step in an ongoing global realignment. It confirms that Washington remains the power capable of reshaping international dynamics, weakening Moscow’s allies, and reminding all that opposition to its partnerships can carry disastrous consequences.
