Strengthening Railway Cooperation between Chad and the United Arab Emirates
By: Charilogone Editorial StaffOn May 2, 2025, a Chadian delegation led by Mr. Guibolo Fanga Mathieu, Acting Minister of Trade and Industry, and His Excellency Mr. Oumar Teguen Idebei Berdei, Ambassador of Chad to the United Arab Emirates, participated in a high-level ministerial meeting between Africa and the United Arab Emirates. This meeting, initiated by Etihad Rail in partnership with several Emirati ministries, aimed to explore opportunities for cooperation in the transport and infrastructure sectors.
Following the discussions, two memoranda of understanding were signed, one with the Republic of South Sudan and the other with Chad. These agreements focus on technical cooperation and the exchange of expertise through the conduct of feasibility studies for railway, logistics, and infrastructure projects. In Chad, this partnership will accelerate the implementation of the rail link project with Cameroon.
Etihad Rail also presented a tripartite cooperation framework involving Chad, the United Arab Emirates, and Cameroon. Decisions taken at the end of the meeting include:
Collection of freight flow data on the Chad-Cameroon rail corridor to assess the project's economic viability;
Finalization of feasibility studies by June 2025;
Approval by the Chadian and Cameroonian parties of the timeline proposed by Etihad Rail, which covers the period from May to December 2025 and defines the next steps, including institutional structuring and the development of a business plan.
This commitment marks a significant step towards improved rail connectivity in Central Africa, with prospects for economic development and trade facilitation between the partner countries.
