Sudan: More Massacres in Al A’Azba
By: Bushara AliAl A’Azba is a poor district in northern Khartoum, primarily inhabited by people from Darfur and Kordofan. This week, the district witnessed a horrific massacre when a militia supporting the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) advanced and captured the area. Many civilians were killed by gunfire, and street executions were carried out under the so-called “Strange Faces Law” (SFL).
This law was first enforced in Kassala State, in eastern Sudan, at the beginning of the war. It targets Sudanese people based on their ethnic profile, mostly focusing on non-Arab citizens. Any Sudanese citizen fleeing the war zone and seeking shelter in SAF-controlled states is often classified by Sudanese intelligence as an RSF collaborator. As a result, they are subjected to harsh interrogation and torture by the authorities for extended periods. The “lucky” ones may receive prison sentences ranging from 5 to 10 years, while the unfortunate ones face execution. Hundreds of students, travelers, and women have been prosecuted under the SFL and denied contact with their families or legal representation.
Nile River State is considered to be like North Korea, where this law is applied arbitrarily. Thousands of young people from African tribes have been detained by security forces and executed based on mere suspicion of supporting the RSF. Their appearance and the way they speak Arabic are often used as justification for their arrest. In three major cities controlled by SAF, women await execution, with the enforcement of laws resting in the hands of state governors. These governors are aligned with Islamist factions, whose militias play a significant role in this war.
The massacre in Al A’Azba bears the hallmarks of ISIS-style brutality. The evidence lies in the beheading of men and the shooting of women and children at point-blank range. Disturbingly, the perpetrators documented their crimes using mobile phones, knowing in advance that they would not be prosecuted. Their territorial gains strengthen the image of Army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan as if he is winning the war against the RSF.
The notorious militia, Al-Bara Bin Malik, has adopted unprecedented methods of execution, either slaughtering victims with knives or mowing them down with machine guns. They have copied many ISIS techniques used in Iraq and Syria, including setting fire to victims while they are still alive.
