Urgent Appeal Regarding the Arbitrary Detention of 1,600 Sudanese Citizens in Port Sudan Prison

Al-Fajr Organization for Peace, Development, and Justice
    Official Statement Addressed
to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

    Date: 19/05/2025

Subject: Urgent Appeal Regarding the Arbitrary Detention of 1,600 Sudanese Citizens in Port Sudan Prison

    Dear Sir/Madam,

Al-Fajr Organization for Peace, Development, and Justice is deeply concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian and legal situation facing approximately 1,600 Sudanese citizens who have been detained in Port Sudan for nearly a year and a half, without any formal charges, investigations, or access to fair legal proceedings.

According to verified reports, these individuals were arrested under allegations of being sympathizers or supporters of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), or merely labeled as “strange faces” in the area. These arrests constitute a grave violation of basic human rights, principles of justice, and legal guarantees enshrined in both Sudanese law and international conventions, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

The mass arbitrary detention of civilians—many of whom are elderly or suffering from health conditions—in undisclosed or unregulated detention conditions is deeply alarming and demands immediate intervention.

In light of this, we respectfully urge the International Committee of the Red Cross, in its neutral and humanitarian capacity, to take the following actions:

    1. Conduct an urgent visit to Port Sudan Prison to assess the conditions and status of the detainees.
    2. Advocate for the respect of legal guarantees and the detainees’ rights to due process, including access to fair trial or immediate release in the absence of formal charges.
    3. Ensure the provision of adequate medical care and humanitarian support in accordance with international detention standards.

We firmly believe that your longstanding humanitarian role in protecting civilians—especially during conflicts and crises—can make a vital difference in addressing this serious and urgent matter.

    With sincere respect and appreciation,

President of Al-Fajr Organization for Peace, Development, and Justice
    Mr. ARBAB AHMED MOHAMMED
