Testimony of the Sudanese refugee in Libya, MARY ABUK ANEY DUT
Testimony of the Sudanese refugee in Libya, MARY ABUK ANEY DUTVoice and video collected By: Magazine Charilogone & African Refugees Rights Initiative
Mary Abuk Aney Dut, a Sudanese refugee in Libya, shared her harrowing
experience. She recounted how she was at home when her neighbors warned
her that the police were coming.
Despite her belief that the police
would not act against them since they had rented the house, the police
arrived with several vehicles, broke down the door, and entered,
shouting "Noutou Noutou." They hit her with the butt of their weapons.
Mary had her UNHCR Libya card, but it did not prevent her and her
children from being taken to prison along with other neighboring
families. They were detained for a week, during which they were beaten.
The prison was filled with people of various African nationalities.
The Libyan police dismissed the significance of the UNHCR card, stating
that they had entered the country illegally.
Around 50 people were
arrested in the Saradj neighborhood, near the UNHCR office in Tripoli.
Mary emphasized that they are refugees and asylum seekers who fled the
war in search of protection, only to find themselves in Libya without
support from the UNHCR, which did not visit them in prison.
Mary's testimony highlights the dire situation faced by Sudanese
refugees in Libya, where they endure violence and lack of protection
despite holding UNHCR documentation.
