Workers' Rights Violations at Xceed in Egypt: An Urgent Alert
By: Alfred Djasnan - Charilogone Editorial StaffThe subcontractor Xceed, located in Smart Village, Egypt, is in the midst of a serious social and professional crisis. On January 9, 2023, a strike broke out at its premises, resulting in a week of unproductive hours. This strike was aimed at denouncing the employees' working conditions and insufficient wages. However, instead of social dialogue, management opted for brutal repression.
Unfair Dismissals and Police Repression
Faced with the workers' demands, Xceed's management responded with a series of unfair dismissals and repressive measures. Several employees were arrested and imprisoned for 30 days, before being expelled from Egyptian territory, in collaboration with the police. This strategy appears aimed at intimidating workers and deterring any attempts at wage demands.
Targeted Arrests and Discrimination
Recent reports reveal a mass arrest of a group of Black foreigners, mainly Cameroonians, while they were waiting for their bus to go to work at Xceed. This raid, carried out by Egyptian forces, sowed panic among the Cameroonian community in Egypt. Since March 2016, arrests of Black foreign workers have increased, often followed by forced repatriations for those without valid residence permits.
A Call for Vigilance and Mobilization
These events highlight a blatant violation of workers' rights and systematic discrimination. It is imperative that human rights organizations and international bodies mobilize to denounce these practices and demand protective measures for foreign workers in Egypt.
The international community must act to ensure social justice and the safety of workers, particularly those exposed to abuse and discrimination. Vigilance and solidarity are essential to put an end to these violations and ensure a work environment that respects fundamental rights.
