At the second ordinary session of the Conference of States Parties of the African Medicines Agency (AMA), held from June 2 to 4, 2025, in Kigali, Rwanda, Ethiopia officially became a member of the Agency. Having joined in April 2024, the country was immediately elected to the AMA Bureau to represent the East African region. This appointment reinforces its commitment to ensuring access to quality medicines on the African continent.

A Major Milestone for Pharmaceutical Regulation in Africa

The AMA, whose founding treaty was adopted in 2019 and entered into force in 2021, aims to harmonize pharmaceutical regulations and combat substandard or falsified medicines. The agency enables better coordination between national regulatory authorities, thus promoting the circulation of safe and effective products.

    Elections and Strategic Decisions

During the conference, several decisions were adopted:

1- Election of Ethiopia as a member of the Bureau for East Africa.

2- Appointment of Dr. Delese Mimi Darko of Ghana as the first Director General of the AMA.

3- Adoption of the rules governing the Agency, including its budget and administrative structure.

4- Inauguration of the AMA headquarters in Kigali, which will serve as a strategic center for medicines regulation.

    Strengthening African Cooperation

With this progress, the AMA establishes a robust regulatory framework to ensure the quality of medical and pharmaceutical products across the continent. The active participation of Ethiopia and other African nations in the Executive Bureau reflects a collective desire to protect public health and encourage pharmaceutical innovation.

Africa is thus taking a key step towards health autonomy by strengthening access to safe and affordable medicines for its population.
