Sudan: The Quest for Lasting Peace in the Face of Political Impasse
By: Charilogone Editorial StaffSince General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan's State coup on October 25, 2021, Sudan has been experiencing a profound political crisis that has jeopardized the democratic transition. The dismissal of Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, followed by his temporary reinstatement and final resignation in January 2022, marked the inability of political and military forces to reach a consensus.
The lack of inclusive dialogue has exacerbated internal tensions, pushing the country into a prolonged stalemate. However, hope is emerging through the Tasees Sudan (New Sudan Foundation) coalition, which brings together various political, military, and social actors in search of a peaceful solution. Unlike the initiatives of the current military government, this coalition now appears to be the only movement capable of uniting a majority of Sudanese, with support estimated at nearly 70% across the country.
As General Burhan and his allies struggle to establish unifying governance, the Tasees coalition offers a viable alternative based on inclusion and national reconciliation. Recognition of this initiative by the international community could mark a decisive turning point in breaking the impasse in Sudan and enabling the building of lasting peace.
The challenge remains immense: convincing all parties to engage in genuine dialogue and rebuilding legitimate governance to ensure a stable and prosperous future for Sudan.
