Sudan: Al-Ubayyid and Al-Jazira Under Threat from Uncontrolled Armed Forces

The security situation in Sudan is deteriorating alarmingly, particularly in the city of Al-Ubayyid and the state of Al-Jazira, where citizens report serious violations committed by uncontrolled armed forces. In Al-Ubayyid, joint forces affiliated with the movements of Minawi, Dr. Jibril, and Abdullah Yahya are accused of multiple abuses against civilians. Residents report violent acts such as deliberate crushing by military vehicles, beatings, looting, theft, and random shootings in the streets. These abuses have led to the deaths of numerous citizens and have spread fear throughout the city.
The violations do not stop there: businesses and homes are regularly raided, citizens are threatened with weapons, and some are extorted under the pretext of belonging to the Rapid Support Forces. The situation becomes particularly critical after sunset, when the streets turn into danger zones due to uncontrolled gunfire by soldiers often under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In response to this escalation, the residents of Al-Ubayyid are calling for urgent intervention from military leaders to end these violations and restore security.
Meanwhile, in the state of Al-Jazira, citizens express deep concern over the growing presence of Tigrayan mercenary groups, introduced by the Sudanese army to reinforce its military operations, especially east of the city of Wad Madani. These groups, estimated at over 4,000 individuals, are armed and stationed in residential areas. Residents accuse them of engaging in illegal activities such as prostitution, drug and alcohol trafficking, assaults on civilians, and illegal deforestation.
These practices raise serious public health concerns, particularly regarding the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Even more troubling, these mercenaries reportedly benefit from the protection of the Sudanese army, making any attempt at regulation or sanction extremely difficult. Observers are urging the relevant authorities to act swiftly to end these abuses, protect civilians, and restore order in the affected regions.
