Notice to Chadian Historians on the Commission Tasked with Rewriting Chad’s History

The remarks below raise legitimate questions about neutrality, sources, methodology, and the overall relevance of such an initiative.
Joseph Ki‑Zerbo was indeed a professor of history, author of major works on African history and on the history of Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), and founder of his own political party, but he never worked with the ruling party in Burkina Faso.
Laurent Gbagbo, also a historian, created his political party to fight the dictatorship of Houphouët-Boigny, then that of Bédié and later Ouattara, up to the present day… He makes history.
You, in Chad, are members of the Mouvement Patriotique du Salut (MPS), some of you even sitting on the party’s Political Bureau, and you operate under the authority of the party’s president, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
How can you claim to be objective in rewriting the history of Chad, knowing that you will be remunerated by the president of the MPS?
2 — Based on what we know about our various presidents and their rule, let us consider:
Ngarta Tombalbaye, for some the father of independence who laid the institutional, political, economic, and cultural foundations of Chad; for others, a dictator.
Malloum Ngakoutou, seen by some as a “Napoleon,” and by many as a traitor.
Goukouni Weddeye, viewed as a resistant figure, and by others as a pro‑Libyan leader who sold the Aouzou Strip.
Hissein Habré, a hero to some, a war criminal to others.
Idriss Déby Itno, a patriot for some, and for others the man who dismantled the State’s institutions.
Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, your employer, whose hesitations continue to cost the country dearly.
3 — You are historians, yet you will never have enough detachment from your emotions, your ethnic affiliations, or your political loyalties to write anything truly objective about past events.
4 — What will your sources be, given that you are not among the historians who have shaped Chadian societal life since independence?
5 — Will the name of the country, “Chad of the Sao,” which for most Chadians has become “Chad of Toumaï” in reference to a skull discovered in the northern part of the country, be submitted to a referendum?
6 — Is this truly the right moment to create a commission to rewrite the history of Chad?
What a pretentious undertaking.
