  • Meeting between Vladimir Putin and Ibrahim Traoré: A Strengthened Strategic Partnership

    By: Charilogone Editorial Staff.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Burkinabe President Ibrahim Traoré met on May 10, 2025, in Moscow, on the sidelines of the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. This exchange highlights the two nations' desire to strengthen their diplomatic, economic, and security cooperation in a rapidly evolving geopolitical context.

During his speech, Vladimir Putin recalled Burkina Faso's commitment to the fight against Nazism, noting that 30,000 Burkinabés fought in the anti-Hitler coalition under the leadership of General Charles de Gaulle. Today, cooperation between Russia and Burkina Faso focuses primarily on the fight against terrorism and extremism, with Russian support aimed at restoring constitutional order and combating radical groups present in Burkina Faso.

Since 2023, bilateral relations have seen several significant advances:

Reopening of the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou after more than 30 years of absence.

Organization of Burkina Faso Economic Days in Russia in October 2024, promoting trade and investment partnerships.

Creation of an intergovernmental commission and a working group dedicated to economic and strategic cooperation.

Training and education play a key role in this rapprochement. For the 2024-2025 academic year, Russia has doubled the scholarship quota, allowing 27 new Burkinabé students to study in Russia with tuition fees covered by the Russian government. In total, approximately 3,500 Burkinabé students have completed their studies in Russia.

Since 2024, the Maison de Russie in Ouagadougou has also played a key role in strengthening cultural and educational ties, particularly through the organization of Russian language courses and cultural events.

    Health and Humanitarian Aid
Russian-Burkinabe cooperation also extends to the fields of health and sanitation, with collaborations to develop medical infrastructure and train specialists. In April 2025, Russia sent a delegation to Burkina Faso to discuss joint scientific projects, including the development of laboratories and the training of researchers.

In terms of humanitarian aid, Russia shipped 25,000 tons of wheat to Burkina Faso in 2024, and a new food shipment is expected this month in Ouagadougou.

    Strengthening international cooperation
On the diplomatic front, Russia and Burkina Faso coordinate their actions within the United Nations and participate in consultations on the Confederation of Sahel States, a new strategic cooperation framework whose first ministerial meeting was held in Moscow in April 2025.

The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Ibrahim Traoré marks a key step in strengthening bilateral relations. These discussions confirm the two nations' desire to deepen their partnership in the economic, educational, security, and humanitarian fields.

This rapprochement is part of a dynamic in which Russia seeks to consolidate its alliances with Africa, establishing mutually beneficial and diversified cooperation for the years to come.
