The tripartite meeting held in Doha on March 18, 2025, mediated by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marked an important milestone in efforts to ease current tensions in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Presidents Félix Tshisekedi (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Paul Kagame (Rwanda) participated in this meeting, which aimed to promote an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
The discussions highlighted progress in diplomatic processes in Luanda and Nairobi, as well as the outcomes of the joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), held in February 2025. Leaders agreed to continue their efforts to integrate these initiatives and ensure a coordinated approach to peace.
The Emir of Qatar was commended for his facilitative role, and the meeting raised hopes for lasting stability in the region. However, challenges remain, including the postponement of talks between the Congolese government and the M23 in Luanda due to unforeseen circumstances. This meeting confirms the importance of genuine political will to honor commitments and pave the way for lasting peace.
