The Al-Kanabi Crisis in Sudan: A Call for Justice and International Accountability

The Al-Kanabi people of Sudan have endured decades of systemic marginalization, culminating in a devastating campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Recent investigations led by Abdulrahman Al-Ajeb and statements from Dr. Jaafar Mohammadin, Secretary-General of the Al-Kanabi Conference, reveal the killing of over 1,200 Al-Kanabi citizens by the Sudanese army and allied militias, with many more missing and unaccounted for.

The Central Committee of the Al-Kanabi Conference identified 2,195 camps—excluding key regions—where forced displacement and destruction have occurred, including the burning of 160 camps in Gezira State and the looting of over 5,000 heads of cattle. The material losses are estimated in the trillions of Sudanese pounds.

Historical decisions, such as those made by Professor Abbas Mekki in 1945, institutionalized the stripping of Al-Kanabi citizenship and relegated them to reserve labor, sowing the seeds of generational injustice. Today, Al-Kanabi laborers continue to face exploitative conditions with no fair compensation.

The violations against the Al-Kanabi include murder, torture, displacement, and looting—acts that intensified after military control of Al-Jazeera State. On January 10, 2025, entire communities were displaced, homes and livestock looted, and young men tortured. Adam Musa Obama, Director of the Darfur Victims Advocacy Organization, affirms that these atrocities meet the legal definition of genocide.

The Al-Kanabi issue has now reached international institutions, underscoring the urgent need for global intervention to hold perpetrators accountable, protect vulnerable communities, and restore the dignity and rights of the Al-Kanabi people.
