  • Sudan: Rapid Support Forces Down Fifth Turkish Bayraktar Drone in El Fasher

    By: Charilogone Editorial Staff

This Thursday, July 10, 2025, a new significant military event occurred in El Fasher, a strategic city in North Darfur: the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemeti, shot down a Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone. Used by the forces of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, based in Port Sudan, this drone was flying over the city as part of surveillance and strike operations. Its destruction represents a turning point in the technological war between the two Sudanese sides.

This is the fifth Turkish Bayraktar drone destroyed by the RSF in Darfur in 2025. Two of these aircraft had already been shot down in Nyala, another in El Fasher, and two in El-Obeid, a pivotal city between Khartoum and the west of the country. In addition, three drones were also destroyed the previous year in Omdurman during intense clashes in the historic capital. These successive incidents reveal the evolving counter-drone capabilities of the RSF, long considered less technologically equipped than the national army.

Sources close to Charilogone indicate that the RSF may have used advanced electronic jamming systems or new-generation counter-drone technologies. This progress has attracted the attention of several security agencies, which have reportedly contacted Hemeti's forces to inquire about the techniques used to neutralize the Bayraktar, as well as two other devices identified under the code names Burglar and Akanji - not officially confirmed, but mentioned in military circles.

The city of El Fasher, the last stronghold outside the direct control of the RSF in the region, has become the epicenter of the conflict. Besieged for months, it has been subjected to intense fighting, marked by drone strikes that have caused significant civilian casualties. The destruction of Bayraktar could slow the regular army's air operations and strengthen the RSF's tactical position on this critical front.

Since the start of the war in April 2023 between the Sudanese regular army and the RSF, Sudan has become a testing ground for foreign military technologies. While Turkey and Egypt support Al-Burhan, the United Arab Emirates is suspected of supporting Hemeti's RSF, giving this conflict a geopolitical dimension that extends far beyond national borders.
