Iranian Parliament Approves Closure of Strait of Hormuz Following US Strikes
By: Charilogone Editorial StaffTehran, June 22, 2025 – Regional tensions have escalated following US strikes targeting Iran's nuclear sites at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. In response, the Iranian Parliament passed a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic, marking a potentially explosive escalation in the confrontation between Tehran and Washington and its allies.
Major General Esmaeil Kowsari, an influential member of the National Security Commission, announced on state television that "Parliament has concluded that the Strait of Hormuz must be closed." However, the final decision is pending approval by the Supreme National Security Council, the body responsible for the country's strategic direction.
In this tense context, NATO issued an official warning to Iran, urging it not to undertake military action in this vital area for global energy trade. The Atlantic Alliance highlighted the major risks to security and economic stability if the strait were to be blocked.
This maritime passage, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil transits, is considered a key strategic gateway for Gulf exports. Its closure would have global economic and geopolitical repercussions and could trigger an unprecedented energy crisis.
