  • Haftar and Putin: A Strategic Alliance Under the Concerned Eyes of the West

    By: Charilogone Editorial Staff

Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, commander of Libya's eastern forces, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on May 10, 2025, as part of an official visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation between Libya and Russia. This meeting comes at a time of growing geopolitical tensions, with the US military presence in the Mediterranean raising concerns.

Haftar is seeking to strengthen relations with Russia, particularly in the area of air defense, in order to secure eastern Libyan airspace. His rapprochement with Moscow could be perceived as a strategic challenge by NATO and the United States, which are closely monitoring military developments in the region.

During his stay, Haftar also met with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov and Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu. These discussions focused on regional stability and strengthening bilateral military cooperation.

This visit marks a new stage in relations between Libya and Russia and could have repercussions for the balance of power in the Mediterranean. It remains to be seen how the West will react to this strategic alliance.
