Chad: The Moment of Truth for Democracy and Popular Sovereignty

By Yves Tallot – Charilogone Editorial Team

As Chad celebrates 65 years of independence, the country remains mired in a deep political, economic, and social crisis. The continued rule of Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, son of the late Marshal Deby, represents a monarchical succession denounced by the citizen movement Wakit Tamma from the very start of the transition. The movement accuses France—particularly President Emmanuel Macron—of actively supporting this dynastic takeover at the expense of the Chadian people.

Macron is said to have mobilized all diplomatic levers to ensure the continuity of the Deby regime, resulting in a loss of credibility for France across the Sahel region. This policy, deemed immoral and neocolonial, has cost lives and squandered opportunities for change. Paris’s choices in Chad have undermined its entire Sahel strategy, rendering its diplomacy inaudible and discredited. Ironically, it is thanks to Wakit Tamma’s tenacity that this deception was exposed.

In this context, Wakit Tamma has emerged as a powerful force of resistance. Its courage has planted seeds of hope in Chad’s political landscape. But those seeds must blossom into flowers, then bear fruit. The struggle is just beginning. It requires building on past gains, uniting Chadians who yearn for peace and justice, and rising above ethnic and regional divisions. Succès Masra has shown that unity is possible. It is time to rally behind those who represent a genuine alternative and abandon sterile political calculations.

However, the signing of the Toumaï Agreement between Masra Succès and Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has been perceived as a betrayal. This pact appears to have been made to consolidate personal power rather than serve the people’s interests. A true democrat cannot endorse such an agreement. Masra’s removal from the political scene would not be a loss for the people, but a moment of clarity. It reminds us that the root of Chad’s suffering remains Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, whose decisions consistently favor his clan, tribe, and in-laws.

One must ask why he has failed to learn from his father’s mistakes, relying instead on the most corrupt political party in Chad: the MPS. This conglomerate of crooks, lackeys, and predators represents a regime devoid of principle. In 33 years of rule, the MPS has produced no meaningful achievements. Chad lags behind in every domain—economic, political, cultural, and athletic. The MPS’s continued grip on power is a major obstacle to the country’s development.

In response, Wakit Tamma has issued clear and urgent demands:

Urge France to loosen its neocolonial grip on Chad.

Demand greater accountability from economic partners regarding resources and loans.

Call on the president to organize a “Peace of the Braves” that includes all excluded political and military actors, without being guided by a warmongering clan-based army.

Chad stands at a crossroads. The moment of truth has arrived. The people must free themselves from the stranglehold of the MPS and its allies. Wakit Tamma embodies a lucid, courageous resistance that offers a future rooted in justice, peace, and dignity. The struggle continues—and it has only just begun.
