Chad: Succes Masra Placed in Pretrial Detention as Political Crisis Intensifies
By: Charilogone Editorial Staff - ChadFormer Prime Minister and leader of the Transformateurs party, Succès Masra, was officially placed in pretrial detention on May 21, 2025, nearly a week after his arrest. Accused of inciting hatred and rebellion, forming and complicity in armed gangs, complicity in murder, arson, and desecration of graves, he is suspected of playing a role in the deadly violence in Mandakao, where 42 people, mostly women and children, were killed.
His arrest, which took place on May 16, was denounced by his party as a "kidnapping," with CCTV footage showing Masra being escorted by armed men in uniform leaving his home. His lawyers dispute these accusations and denounce a political maneuver aimed at neutralizing an influential opponent in the run-up to the 2029 presidential election.
A Legal and Political Mobilization
Faced with this detention, a group of international lawyers, led by the firm Bourdon & Associés, has pledged to defend Masra and denounce what they consider to be an instrumentalization of the justice system. Former Prime Minister Pahimi Padacké Albert has also responded, demanding either Masra's immediate release or the presentation of irrefutable evidence of the charges against him.
A Political Staged Event in Beinamar
While the country is still reeling from the Mandakao massacre, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno is planning an official visit to the scene of the tragedy, accompanied by state media. This publicity stunt aims to divert public attention and place the moral responsibility for the massacre on Masra, a strategy denounced by his supporters. The trivialization of the Toumai and Kinshasa Agreements
In this political crisis, the Mahamat Kaka regime is blatantly trivializing the Toumai and Kinshasa Agreements, of which the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo was the main guarantor, along with the Economic Community of Central African States (ECAC). These agreements, supposed to guarantee political stability and respect for democratic rights, now seem to have been relegated to the background, as the crackdown on the opposition intensifies.
The Toumai and Kinshasa Agreements, which have historically played a role in bringing peace to the country, are now being undermined by authoritarian governance that ignores international commitments. This situation could further undermine the Chadian regime's diplomatic credibility and exacerbate regional tensions.
A Tense Political Climate
This case highlights the abuses of the Chadian regime, marked by increased repression of the opposition and a desire for total control of power. Masra's detention could be an attempt to disqualify him politically, aimed at preventing him from running in the next elections.
Chad's political future will depend on popular resistance and the ability of institutions to preserve democratic space. The international community is closely monitoring this case, which could have major repercussions for the country's stability.
