A Decisive Step for the Great Green Wall

On July 4, 2025, in N'Djamena, the Chadian government and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) signed a $15.8 million strategic agreement, financed by the Green Climate Fund. This agreement covers the implementation of the flagship SURAGGWA (Strengthening the Resilience of the Great Green Wall of Africa) project, which aims to restore degraded lands and strengthen climate resilience in the Sahel region.

This signing, concluded between Mr. Hassan Bakhit Djamous, Minister of Environment, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, and Mr. Aristide Ongone Obame, FAO Representative in Chad, marks a major step forward in the fight against environmental degradation and food insecurity.

    SURAGGWA Project Objectives:

Rehabilitate degraded lands in the Sahel

Strengthen community resilience to climate change

    Promote sustainable and inclusive agriculture

Reduce food insecurity and rural poverty

Strategic Alignment: The project is fully aligned with Chad's national priorities, including the National Development Plan, the "Chad Connection 2030" vision, and the National Strategy for Agricultural Transformation. It reflects Chad's political will to integrate climate challenges into its sustainable development trajectory.

Regional Scope: Beyond Chad, SURAGGWA will involve eight Sahelian countries, with an integrated, multisectoral approach to address cross-border issues such as desertification, socioeconomic pressures, and the effects of climate on rural populations.

A lever for sustainable transformation: Through this program, the partners aim to strengthen the Great Green Wall initiative, a true pillar of resilience and food security in the most vulnerable regions.
