Chad Under Tension: The Transformers Face the Shadow of Exclusion
By: Joe le Mutant – Charilogone Editorial StaffA long-time activist, jovial and always ready to joke, confides in me in a moment of deep seriousness his concern about the resurgence of the ghosts of October 20, 2022. That day, marked by violent repression, still haunts the minds of supporters of the Transformers party. Initially skeptical, I step back and try to put myself in the shoes of an ordinary activist, a silent witness to a worsening atmosphere in N'Djamena.
Two scenarios emerge:
Hypothesis 1: An unjust conviction of Masra, the party leader, could prolong his incarceration. His disoriented activists could react strongly.
Hypothesis 2: If Masra is released but the courts order the dissolution of the Transformers, who will benefit from the political gains of this movement? This decision could sound like a provocation.
On reflection, one conclusion is clear: are the streets about to speak?
Driving 14% of the Chadian presidential electorate, primarily from the South, underground is tantamount to a policy of exclusion. The ruling party (MPS) seems poised to accomplish the unthinkable: rallying a unanimous opposition against it, something no party has ever achieved before.
Imagine the clashes in bars between MPS activists, supported by the political police, and supporters of the Transformateurs. Even supporters of Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, alias Kaka, outside the MPS, might be outraged by the judicial decisions targeting Masra.
Naturally, Kaka would only do what he knows how: deploy his clan army to repress and arbitrarily arrest peaceful citizens. This is one scenario, among others, that seems to be taking hold in N'Djamena, where judicial fear is gaining ground. Joe the Mutant takes this judicial hatred very seriously. Who will be the next target? This Fifth Republic seems to be led by young political veterans, disconnected from the economic, cultural, and social realities of Chad.
Everything needs to be rebuilt.
