Sudan: Al‑Burhan disputes medical reports and accuses some doctors of involvement in the war

In the context of a prolonged war and persistent tensions between Sudan’s rival factions, statements attributed to the President of the Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan, have sparked new controversy. These remarks, circulated across several media outlets, challenge the reports issued by the Sudanese Doctors’ Network and accuse certain medical practitioners of having played an active role in the conflict, particularly in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The claims come at a time when medical organizations continue to document violations committed against civilians and healthcare workers.

In statements reportedly made yesterday in Port Sudan, General Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan rejected the reports published by the Sudanese Doctors’ Network, referring to what he described as the role of some doctors who worked in areas under RSF control during the war.

According to the remarks attributed to him, al‑Burhan claimed that these doctors “were among the decisive tools of the war” and allegedly engaged in activities such as “espionage, transmitting coordinates, and reporting collaborators.” He reportedly described these actions as “informing,” while presenting them as having contributed, in his view, to “achieving victories.”

The statements also mention victims who allegedly died as a result of such information, claiming it was used in “massacres committed by militias in Khartoum.” They further assert that some doctors “compiled blacklists intended for liquidation.” Additional allegations suggest that doctors were killed in Wad Madani “after being reported by colleagues for refusing to finish off wounded individuals,” with similar incidents said to have occurred in southern Khartoum and in Al‑Jazirah State.

The remarks also echo earlier accusations that some doctors carried out “unjustified amputations on wounded RSF fighters,” injected them “with blood contaminated with hepatitis,” or administered “incompatible blood transfusions leading to their deaths.” These claims allege that “white coats betrayed their oath and executed the wounded.”

The statements attributed to al‑Burhan conclude with the assertion that “in this war, there is no innocent person and no civilian,” and with the accusation that “the Sudanese Doctors’ Committee, the Sudanese Doctors’ Union, and other similar bodies are merely fronts for intelligence services.”
