NIGER: THE GOVERNMENT ORDERS THE CLOSURE OF THE OFFICE OF THE RED CROSS NGO (ICRC)By the Charilogone Editorial Team
The Nigerien government denounced the headquarters agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and ordered the immediate closure of its offices as well as the departure of its foreign staff. This decision was taken following concerns about the management of humanitarian aid by the ICRC and other NGOs.
This government measure comes 3 months after the closure of the offices of the Technical Cooperation and Development Agency in the country. The International Committee of the Red Cross has worked in Niger since 1990.
The Red Cross said its office in Niger was responding to humanitarian needs resulting from the conflict in the Liptako-Gourma and Lake Chad regions, and said it had provided significant humanitarian assistance to more than 70,000 displaced people.
This is an important turning point in Niger's humanitarian policy, which could have repercussions on vulnerable populations who have benefited from ICRC services.
