On Monday, August 18, 2025, the White House hosted a high-level diplomatic meeting bringing together U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and several European leaders. The goal: to lay the groundwork for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. This initiative followed an informal meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which ended without any official commitment.
During the meeting, Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with solemnity, urging the United States to provide security guarantees for Ukraine and to work toward an immediate end to hostilities. He also called for the return of displaced Ukrainian children and the resumption of prisoner exchanges with Russia, emphasizing the humanitarian urgency of the conflict.
Donald Trump, while expressing his desire for peace, acknowledged that his conversation with Putin had not yielded a formal ceasefire promise. However, he assured that his administration would actively work over the next two weeks to reach a consensus on key issues discussed, including security guarantees, truce conditions, and monitoring mechanisms.
The European leaders present—among them Emmanuel Macron, Ursula von der Leyen, and Giorgia Meloni—unanimously supported the call for peace, stressing the need for a durable diplomatic solution. They also warned against any concessions that might undermine Ukrainian sovereignty or encourage future aggression.
Despite the encouraging statements, the situation on the ground remains troubling. Bombings were reported in Kharkiv on the same day, underscoring the fragility of the ongoing process. Zelensky emphasized that peace cannot be built without justice and accountability.
This meeting represents a significant step in international efforts to end the war in Ukraine. If promises are kept, it could pave the way for a historic agreement. For now, however, caution remains essential.
